Education and outreach are a key component of research.
Our research takes us from the laboratory to the field. This summer the Samish Tribe graciously provided a research boat and crew, allowing the most extensive field study in the San Juan’s and Fidalgo Bay we have ever been able to perform. Each survey we bring undergraduate(s) into the field. Students get hands on research experience - they measure water and soil chemistry, count organisms and observe for disease, and are crucial in performing the research. Field studies are extensive and the more individuals, the more that can be done with a limited sampling time, which is often dictated by tides. In the laboratory – physiological experiments, while simple in nature, are time extensive requiring many individuals to complete. Each year our laboratory accepts around a dozen undergraduates, some performing benign tasks, others large studies and some even produce first author papers (see Eric Gupta et al, 2014).
Together we are able to explore the dynamics of physiology, evolution and ecology, all in hopes for conservation and restoration.
Within this section examples of our outreach and media involvement are provided.
